Thirty-six volunteers hauled 160 pounds of trash out of the Arroyo Simi waterway in Moorpark on Saturday, Sept. 19, keeping debris from flowing toward the coast.
The City of Moorpark thanked the volunteers on X on Wednesday, Sept. 23. The cleanup ran from 9 a.m. to noon at Villa Campesina Park, 4704 Leta Yancy Road.
The effort was part of the 42nd annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, organized in cooperation with the California Coastal Commission. The city's event page describes the statewide program as California's largest annual volunteer effort, with sites targeting beaches, waterways, trails and parks to intercept litter before it reaches the ocean.
Moorpark's site focused on the Arroyo Simi, a waterway that carries runoff toward the Pacific. The city has not yet posted a date for next year's cleanup.
