Moorpark residents can pick up free mulch Saturday, Sept. 19, at the city's Public Services Facility, 627 Fitch Ave.
The city hosts the giveaway quarterly, offering mulch produced from trimming the thousands of park and street trees Moorpark maintains each year, according to the city's compost and mulch page. The Sept. 19 event runs from 9 a.m. to noon.
City staff will sort the mulch into piles by color and texture. Residents can take up to two bags or containers of whichever variety they prefer. Staff will not fill bags for residents, so the city recommends bringing gloves, a shovel, plastic bags or other containers, and a wheeled trash can for easier hauling. Anyone loading mulch into an open truck bed should bring a tarp. The city also suggests bringing a friend to help.
The Sept. 19 pickup is the third Free Mulch Day of 2026, following events in January and May. No date for a fourth event has been posted.
The mulch giveaway is separate from Moorpark's Free Landfill Day, also known as Community Cleanup Day, scheduled for the same weekend. The City of Moorpark posted the Free Mulch Day announcement on X on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
The event is open to Moorpark residents only. For questions, contact the Moorpark Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department at (805) 517-6364.
