Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin will host a free Scam Alert Seminar on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m. at the Thousand Oaks Teen Center. The event is open to all residents in Irwin's 42nd Assembly District, which includes Camarillo and Moorpark.
The seminar is free.
Irwin is partnering with the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI) and the Conejo Recreation and Park District to put on the event, according to Irwin's events page. The session will cover phishing emails, fraudulent messages and fake investment schemes, along with warning signs to watch for and practical steps residents can take to protect their personal information.
Resources from participating organizations will be available for attendees to take home.
The seminar arrives alongside a recent wave of scam reports in Ventura County. The Ventura County Assessor's Office warned property owners in August about a scheme encouraging seniors to file a nonexistent federal IRS form called "1098-SR" to freeze their property taxes. That fraud spread through social media posts, online ads and phone calls, the assessor's office said.
Irwin chairs the Assembly Select Committee on Cybersecurity and co-chairs the National Conference of State Legislatures Task Force on Cybersecurity.
Residents who cannot attend in person can watch the seminar live on Irwin's Facebook page. A recording will be posted to her website afterward.
RSVPs are encouraged to help organizers plan for seating and materials but are not required. Residents can register through Irwin's website or call the district office at (805) 370-0542.
The Thousand Oaks Teen Center is located at 1375 E. Janss Rd., Thousand Oaks.
